Delta Faucets: An Overview

Delta faucets are among the most popular brands of kitchen and bathroom faucets at the moment. The Delta Faucet Company, which was formed in the 1920s, has quite a wide range of brands in its stable and these include Peerless Faucets (a value oriented brand) and Brizo, which offers high fashion and design. Given the company’s size and scale you can be sure that these are quality products backed by superb manufacturing facilities and excellent and innovative design facilities. These include the company’s Diamond Seal technology, which is designed to make valves last for more than 5 million uses by coating them with a hard internal coating of diamond embedded on a ceramic disk that makes them last ten times longer than most others. For this article though, I’m going to keep things focussed on Delta.

The Delta Faucet Range

Delta is perhaps most famous for its kitchen faucets (which I’ll talk about later) but it also has some beautiful and innovative bathroom and shower faucets. But its coolest and most loved is the touch sensitive faucet. Let’s start with that.

The Delta Touch Faucet

delta touch sensitive faucetThe touch faucet is cool in that you can bump or touch it more or less anywhere and it will switch on, allow you to wash your hands, and then it turns off again. The idea is that if you have your hands covered with dirt or even if you’ve touched something like raw chicken, you don’t want to spread that all over whatever you touch next – most often the handles on your faucet. With this you just touch it on the stem or anywhere else and on it goes. Delta calls it Touch2O technology.

It’s not often that taps get written up in Gizmodo, the tech blog, but they called this:

Geeneeus functionality, and perfect, minimalist design

They point out that it is a bit of a hassle to install yourself so suggest you get a professional to do it. It is also a bit expensive costing between $300 and $500.

Delta Kitchen Faucets

The more standard range of kitchen faucets comes down quite a bit in price. The Delta Leland (pictured) can be bought for under $200 (although the list prices easily go $100 more than that – ignore those and shop around).

These are pretty simple and in some ways even classic looking faucets yet on the inside they are packed with technology including the Diamond Seal that means they probably won’t leak in your lifetime.

It has a pull-down hose that gives you a lot of flexibility and it has a really good magnetic lock that holds it in place. People like the quality and the fact that it has a great finish. The workings are also really smooth and deliver an excellent flow and mix of water.

You can also get it with a matching soap dispenser if you need one.In addition it comes in a variety of finishes.

Delta Bathroom Faucets

One of the cooler bathroom faucets on offer is the Delta touch lavatory faucet. You probably don’t need a touch faucet in the bathroom, but it sure is nice to have one. It also meets all of the water saving standards out there.

Delta Shower Faucets.

The best value shower faucet on offer is the Economy Water Saving Shower Head (pictured below). This costs less than $20 but the big saving is not on the purchase price, its on the water usage. The shower head uses about 1/3 less water than other comparable showers based on the company’s research showing that bigger drops if water provide better coverage than smaller ones, while still saving water. The spray pattern is also designed to give good coverage.

Moen Faucets: A quick history of the revolutionary single-handle faucet

Single-handled faucets have been around for so long that most of us have forgotten that they were actually a pretty revolutionary idea that completely changed the way many of us use taps and that it was Moen faucets that first had this features.

The company we have to thank is Moen, whose founder burnt his hands with hot water way back in 1937 and set out to invent a new way of mixing hot and cold water.

The story goes that it took him years of experimenting, much of which was interrupted by the Second World War, before he finally figured out how to make a mixing cartridge that is now at the heart of all Moen faucets. It was only until 1947that he actually managed to get working designs out into the market but by 1959 it had taken the world by storm. Fortune Magazine called it one of the greatest inventions of modern times and the company is still listed as one of America’s best by the business magazine ( You can read a bit more about this story of how Al Moen invented the first of his faucets on the company’s website by clicking here.)

Since then innovation has stayed in the company’s DNA as it has a huge range of innovative technologies that change the way we shower or bath every day. A few of these are:

Biomimicry in Moen Shower Faucets

A hot trend in design these days is what’s known as biomimicry, or copying designs from nature. The logic is simple. If millions of years of evolution have led to a particular design in nature, then it is probably about as optimised as it will ever be. Some examples include learning from the shape of whales when designing submarines or looking at how insects hide when designing stealth for military applications. In the bathroom, Moen redesigned its shower heads to incorporate the geometric principles of Phi (the ratio between the diameter of a circle and its circumference) as well as the Fibonacci series of numbers (which govern, for instance, the way that petals on plants grow). This helped it produce a shower that gave an optimal feeling of water spray.

 Modular Design in Moen Faucets

Another amazing innovation that is so simple you wonder why it took so long to invent is Moen’s Common Valve System. The basic idea here is that instead of having a faucet as a totally integrated design that has to be replaced completely if you ever remodel and want a new look, is that you have a shared valve (the heart of the faucet). This stays and you simply place a new style of faucet on top without having to call in the plumber. It is so simple that they claim it is like changing a light bulb. Now why didn’t I think of that?

Moen’s innovative kitchen faucets

I feel like I’m repeating a theme here with stuff that is so simple, anyone ought to have thought of it but didn’t. This comes in the form of several really simple improvements that are found on Moen kitchen faucets. These include a soft finish so that things don’t slip out of your hands when they are covered in soap, as well as really clever pulldown faucets that are easy to pull and have a great range of motion.
If I sound like a fan, that’s because I am. Speak to a few contractors out there and ask what faucets they find easy to install and that their clients love. These will probably come up on the list. They aren’t cheap but they are good. If you’d like to find a few Moen faucet reviews you could take a look over at some of the bestsellers of their on Amazon as most of them collect 5 stars and get great writeups. You could start by taking a look at this Amazon listing if you’re at a loss.

The Wide Range of Pfister Faucets for DIY Installers

If you are looking for high quality yet reasonably priced faucets for a kitchen or bathroom, one company that you ought to consider is Pfister. Don’t be put off by the name. This is a company that can trace its roots back 100 years and it is also part of the Stanley, Black and Decker group of companies.

Their faucets are also available from a wide variety of online retailers including Amazon.com and Home Depot. The company also provides extensive help and documentation so they really are ideal for the DIY person in the family who is looking to cut down on plumber’s costs by doing a lot of the work themselves.

If you are concerned about the environment and about conserving water, they also fit your needs.  Tehy claim that their Pacedena bathroom faucet can cut your household water consumption by as much as 30% by aerating the waterflow so you can wash easily with less water.

They also offer great support and help in troubleshooting and faucet repair on their own website.

Okay, enough guff about the company, let’s look at some of their products

Pfister Bathroom Faucets

The best known of their range is the Pasadena, which looks really good, saves water and comes with a 10 year warranty on its mechanical functioning (and a 5 year warranty on its finish). It comes in a variety of finishes including brushed nickle and polished chrome and has won numerous design awards.

If you want a classic traditional look then consider the Sedona or Savannah collections. These are much more traditional looking yet are also timeless in their simplicity.

They are not exactly cheap, but are reasonably priced in a range of $80 to about $200. All things considered that’s not bad, especially since they hold you hand when it comes to installation.

The range available for kitchens is also pretty wide. Among the more popular is the Rembrandt, which is a pullout faucet that makes it much easier to clean large pots or fill a watering can from the kitchen.  You can get them in 1,2,3 or 4 hole configuration so they should fit quite easily with your existing setup. You can also get a matching soap dispenser, which is always handy.

Today’s Options In Bathroom Faucets

These day’s consumers have an enormous variety to choose from when looking to purchase bathroom faucets. Not only can they find a large selection at their local home improvement store, but there are also retailers that specialize in bathroom faucets and sinks. Depending on your budget, personal style and functional need, there is likely something to accommodate everyone. Prices range from super economical to borderline outrageous, however not everyone is buying for their own homes. Contractors will typically buy generic and relatively inexpensive faucets that can get the job done, but are not necessarily nice to look at.

The design choices are endless, and are the manufacturers attempt to keep up with the ever-changing styles of a wide consumer base. Bathroom faucets come in a number of different finishes including chrome, brass, nickel, bronze, copper and platinum to name a few. The handles range from a standard knob type, to lever type with handles on each side of the faucet, to single handle for both hot and cold water. The faucets themselves range from short to long neck, light to hard pressure, and with or without built-in plunger.

Bathroom faucets also include shower faucets, which are even more customizable. Instead of a faucet, some use a hand-held hose with a lever to adjust the way the water is released. There are several settings on the handle of the hose that give the user different effects similar to a massager with pulsating spurts of water. There are faucets that are simply nozzles mounted in the wall that spray water like one would find in a Jacuzzi, but are in a standup shower. Then there are ones mounted up high in the shower and simulate a waterfall effect.

Faucets for the bathroom are sold individually as replacement pieces or sold together with a sink or shower. Colors are also a customizable option that one can pay for. Therefore, not only can you get them in different finishes, but also the handles can have accents to match your tiles, sink, or the accessories with which you decorate your bathroom. These accents can be porcelain, marble, granite or glass to name a few. The prices for all of these options get steeper as you continue to shop for more unique designs.

In any store or website, you can see the huge range of prices that start at roughly $20, and goes all the way up to and beyond $1,000. Most of the more expensive price tags belong to the designer manufacturers, and include more than simply the faucet. In fact, some of the more unique shower faucets allow the user to adjust the temperature of the water using a digital readout and personal preset settings. These also come with a remote control so you can have your shower ready for you before you even get inside the bathroom, since they have a range of up to thirty feet. Of course, not everyone needs a remote for his or her shower, but it is nice to know that if you wanted one, that option is available.

The modern bathroom is a place where people spend a lot of time. If you own a home, it is common knowledge that an investment in your bathroom can actually increase the value of your home. Items like custom bathroom faucets set your home apart from others, allowing you to add your own personal style to your living area. They are simple to change, and if you are not too handy, there are some stores that will offer to install your faucets for you at an additional cost. Therefore, the sky is the limit when choosing bathroom faucets.
